Change of Heart

Dominic

Vale happily licked Dominic’s hand as they stood outside the imposing iron gates of the coven house, his leash held loosely in Dominic’s grip. They’d just come from the veterinarian’s office where, thankfully, Vale got a clean bill of health.

Dominic had been on the verge of posting “Found dog” flyers for Vale around town. But no one had come forward looking for him, and the dog had happily settled into life with Dominic. It seemed meant to be.

The late morning sun beat down unrelentingly. A trickle of sweat ran down Dominic’s neck as he stared up at the Gothic style building that loomed before them. He still wasn’t sure why he felt compelled to come here again seeking answers, but some instinct had drawn him. They needed to find solutions, and their coven held knowledge passed down through generations.

Vale panted up at Dominic, tongue lolling. With a deep breath, Dominic gave the leash a gentle tug. “Come on boy, it’s all or nothing now.”

Vale barked as if in agreement and they made their way up the winding path to the imposing double doors. Dominic’s heart pounded, but he ignored his nerves. Answers were inside somewhere, he just had to be brave enough to seek them out.

The cool shade of the covered entryway was a relief after the hot exposed walk. Dominic raised a shaking hand to grasp the ornate door knocker, its dull metal shape like a roaring dragon’s head. The sound of it echoed through the stone chambers within.

Dominic noticed dark circles under Lee’s eyes. “Hey, you alright? You’re not looking too good…”

Lee started to reply then stopped, shaking his head as if to clear it. “Nevermind. Did you need something?”

Dominic decided not to push it. “Are Father and Lina around? I need to speak with them.”

Lee stepped back, nodding reluctantly. As Vale entered, his melancholy seemed to lift and he bent to pet the dog affectionately. Dominic was struck by this uncharacteristically gentle behavior from Lee.

“I’ll leave Vale with you while I talk to Father,” Dominic offered, sensing they could both benefit from the dog’s calming presence right now. Lee just nodded, not taking his eyes off Vale.

Back then, Lee had been like the big brother Dominic always wanted, bringing him snacks while gaming and letting him feel included. They’d drifted apart over years of simmering resentment on Lee’s side. But seeing him just now, Dominic felt hopeful they could mend things.

Dominic made his way through the achingly familiar house to his Father’s home office. As he passed the living room, he remembered nights playing video games there with Lee, before bitterness took over him due to Lina’s influence.

Dominic felt an odd chill in the air that hadn’t been there on his last visit. The hairs on his arm prickled uneasily. It was as if the very magic was being drained out of his body in this space - the energy felt wrong, tainted somehow.

Unease stirring in his gut, Dominic quickened his pace down the hall.
